“Whatcha doin’?” She looked over at him with wide, innocent eyes, her soft voice cutting the silence.

“Continuing my father’s research. He believed that people like you, Kitty, were the next step in human evolution. By studying your blood, I may be able to prove his theories were correct.”

“There’s more people like me?” she asked.

“Yes, I believe there are thousands throughout the world, with all sorts of abilities.” He peered into his microscope again, a giddy grin on his face.

“Like what?”

“Cellular regeneration, telekinesis, even the ability to fly!” He never got tired of talking about the possibilities... except when he was trying to concentrate. Her questions buzzed around him like a swarm of gnats that he couldn’t shoo away.

“So what are you looking for?” She stood up and walked over to him, ducking under his arm to try to get to the microscope.

He patiently walked her back to her chair. “It’s very complicated, I doubt a 13 year old girl would be able to understand. Please, go back to reading your book. I need to concentrate.”

She squinted her eyes at him, getting angry. This was no fun at all. He’d promised it would be fun.

He sighed and knelt down in front of the chair. “Just give me one more hour, then I’ll take you out for ice cream. Deal?”

She smiled. “Deal.”
