Kitty sat at a table at the public library, books piled around her like she was building a fort, doing research for a history paper she didn’t want to write. She furiously scribbled out the line she’d just written before tossing the pen down and rubbing her eyes. She was seeing two of everything, and was nowhere near being finished.

Her phone buzzed in her pocket and she welcomed the interruption. She broke into a smile at the thought it might be Jeremy, even if she couldn’t leave and go to him at the moment. The smile faltered when she saw it was a text from Liz.

Have you told Jeremy the truth yet?

Kitty sighed and typed out a quick answer. No, been too busy having sex to talk.

She slammed the phone closed, set it to silent, and shoved it to the bottom of her bag. She’d rather read about war and death and amputations than deal with her own problems. And for now, that meant ignoring Liz.
