Letting Thomas and Trevor watch a horror movie had been a mistake. This was Kitty’s first time babysitting the twins, and though they were only 7, they insisted they wouldn’t get scared. No wonder it took her seven years to convince Liz to let her watch them.

Myers knew it was her first time alone with the boys. He watched quietly from just inside the door as the boys huddled next to Kitty on the couch, one on each side. Whatever reaction he was expecting from her, what she did next was not it.

She slowly reached an arm around each boy, smoothing their hair before kissing each little head in turn. “I won’t let anything happen to you. There’s nothing to be afraid of, I promise, it’s just a movie.”

Something inside John clicked, and he was finally able to put a name to the feeling he’d been having lately whenever he was around her. Love. He was in love with Kitty.
