“I’m sorry.”

I ignore him, continuing to hit the punching bag as hard as I can, everything I want to scream at him running through my mind. How could you be so careless? What would you have done if I hadn’t gotten there in time? I know we’ve never said it but I can’t live without you, I’d die if you died!

“I know, I know, I was stupid. I should’ve waited for backup. I’m just so tired of being the ‘babysitter’, I wanted to be the hero for once.” He circles me and the bag, but I don’t even look at him. I throw a few roundhouse kicks in just as he steps behind the bag, my foot narrowly missing his face.

With a sigh he puts his hands on my shoulders, turning me to look at him. “Katie, please, talk to me.” He only calls me Katie when we’re alone, and it crumbles my resolve to never speak to him again.

“We’ve talked about this before. I can’t focus if I’m worried that you’re in danger.” I pull back and turn to grab a towel to wipe myself off. He takes my hand and stops me, pulling me back to him. The tears he sees in my eyes surprise him as much as they do me.

“I will be careful, it won’t happen again. I... I love you Katie.” It’s the first time he’s said it. And all it took was nearly getting killed, me saving his life, and then not talking to him for 12 hours.

I hug him despite being hot and sweaty, pressing my cheek to his. "I love you too. And if you ever do that again, I'll kill you."
