Prompt: #172 Christmas - Drabble Table
Word Count: 291
It was suspiciously quiet. Kitty, babysitting so that Liz and Jack could go Christmas shopping for the twins, called up the stairs.
“Boys? What are you doing?”
No answer – not a good sign. She quickly ascended the stairs and looked in the boys’ room, only to find it empty. As she turned around she heard a crash come from the master bedroom.
A look inside the room made her gasp. All the dresser drawers were open and Thomas was digging around in a bottom one, while all she could see of Trevor were his feet and he burrowed under the bed.
“What are you doing?” she asked sternly.
“They gotta be hidden around here somewhere, Aunt Kitty!” Trevor called from under the bed. He wiggled his way back out and she struggled not to laugh at the dust bunnies stuck in his hair.
“Yeah, there have to be Christmas presents around here somewhere, and we’re gonna find ‘em,” Thomas said.
Kitty gathered the two boys to her and sat them down on the bed. “First of all, your mom and dad are much too smart to leave your presents laying around here, so there’s no point in looking. Secondly, do you really want to ruin the surprise of Christmas morning? Imagine how disappointed they would be if they knew you’d found everything ahead of time.”
The boys nodded and looked at one another. Kitty felt sure they were psychically plotting something she couldn’t prevent.
“Now clean this up, and if you’re good for the rest of the day, I’ll give you your presents from me and Uncle John early. Deal?”
That did the trick. “Deal!” they responded in unison, then started to clean. If nothing else works, always resort to bribery.
