“You sure have been studying a lot lately, Kitty. How are you doing in your classes?” Dana asked as they walked through the grocery store. This was the first significant amount of time they’d spent together in weeks, and Kitty was being even quieter than usual.

Kitty shrugged. “I don’t think my brain’s wired for chemistry. No matter how much I study, I just don’t get it.” It was a half-truth - she was having trouble in chemistry, but hadn’t been studying. All her spare time was spent with Jeremy.

“Maybe I could help, I took my fair share of chemistry classes in college. If you want.”

Kitty looked at her, amazed, as they walked up to checkout. No matter what she did to this woman, no matter how much she yelled or lied, she kept being nice to her. And now matter how much Kitty kept trying to fortify them, Dana’s patience and kindness were slowly tearing chunks out of her walls. 

“Yeah, sure, that’d be....” She was cut off by shouting a few feet from them. Everything happened in a flash... the man with the gun, people screaming, the man wheeling around to aim the gun at Dana. Kitty jumped in front of Dana, grabbing her hand and phasing them both, and stared down the barrel of the gun. Kitty was shaking, but not with fear... with anger.

“You touch her and I’ll kill you.” Dana realized that whatever she had thought of Kitty before, she had seriously underestimated the girl, and the depth of Kitty’s attachment to her. Despite the dangerous situation, Dana smiled. This man and his gun had just given Dana her first true glimpse into Kitty’s heart.
