When he picked her up she wrapped her arms around his shoulders and let her head rest on his shoulder. She normally would have been self-conscious, thinking about what his neighbors would think if they saw him carrying her down the hall. She would have told him it was okay to lie and say that she'd been drunk. As it was, the only thought she had was that he smelled nice.

"Turn the lights on first?" Finally being in a safe place on a soft couch, nothing was going to keep her awake other than sheer will power. And that would not be enough if he left her in the dark. Thankfully she got her request out before he disappeared into the kitchen. She took her phone out of her pocket and put it on the coffee table, then unzipped her sweatshirt, pulling it off her arms and balling it up on the couch beside her. That seemed to alleviate most of the smoky smell. With a sigh she let her head fall back onto the sofa cushion, not letting herself close her eyes. She had to stay awake. She couldn't do that to him. He deserved to know what happened to put her in this state.

He returned quickly and handed her a glass, which she took with both hands as if he'd just rescued her from a blizzard and the glass was full of steaming hot chocolate. She took a small sip, then a long drink. It was soothing, and when she was done she set the glass on the table next to her phone.

"Again, I'm sorry for doing this to you, I just.... I couldn't think of anywhere else I'd rather go."
