Part 4 - The Beginning
Four days later, Kitty was given a clean bill of health and released from the medical section. She immediately made her way to the library in search of the one person she wanted to see the most, and the only one who hadn't visited her once after she'd woken up. Abe was in his tank, reading, though no one was around to turn the pages.
"Kitty, so nice to see you up and about."
She smiled and nodded, looking around. "It's good to be up and about. Have you seen Myers?"
Abe gestured toward the door. "Ah, yes, he just left. I was reading some lovely Tennyson aloud, and he seemed to get a bit agitated. He left muttering something about needing some fresh air."
"Thanks, Abe." She started for the door, then turned back. "What were you reading, exactly?"
"The Miller's Daughter, a love poem. It seemed apropos considering what was on his mind, and what I felt from you in New Orleans." He made the face that Kitty had come to learn meant that he was smiling.
"Don't worry, I haven't spoken a word."
She grinned crookedly at him, wondering as she had many times before, about how much he knew, and kept to himself.
"Thanks again, Blue. Oh, here." She turned the page for him, then waved goodbye and headed out the ornate double doors.

She found him outside, in the back driveway, tinkering with his bike. She walked up to the opposite side of the bike from him, bending down to try to get his attention.
"Well, I'm alive, in case you were wondering." Her tone was sarcastic and angry - both of which covered what she really felt. Hurt.
"I know," he replied without looking up. "Red told me."
"Red told you? You didn't want to see for yourself?"
He stuttered a bit. "Your friends were here, I didn't want to intrude." He mentally kicked himself. Why am I making excuses?
Her hand found its way onto her hip. "They left days ago!" She struggled to keep her voice even. She didn't want to fight with him, she just wanted to understand why he didn't come to see her.
He searched through the toolbox next to him to avoid answering her. Moments of silence passed uncomfortably. Finally Kitty stood with a frustrated sigh and started to walk away.
"So when are you leaving?" he asked in an accusatory tone.
She turned back. "Leaving? Where am I going?" Her brow furrowed; she genuinely had no idea what he was talking about.
"Back to New York." He finally stood and looked at her. As usual, she had difficulty reading his expression. Was that sadness, or anger?
She shook her head. "Why would you think..." He could almost picture the light bulb turning on over her head as she figured it out.
"Bobby..." she said softly. "You overhead me talking to Bobby. How much did you hear?" She couldn't believe he would eavesdrop like that, but she was more concerned about how much he'd heard.
"Enough." He clenched his jaw, his nervous habit when he was angry or frustrated.
She took a few steps back in his direction. "Obviously not, or you would have heard me tell him that I don't want to go back there. That I belong here now, that you guys are my family and I love you." She blushed deep crimson. "All of you." She felt relieved - that meant he hadn't heard her confess her feelings for him. She thanked God for small favors.
John's expression softened, his brows lifting slightly, the tension in his shoulders releasing. "So, you're staying?"
She looked into his eyes, the last of her anger fading like a wisp of smoke from one of Red's cigars. She tilted her head and gave the slightest hint of a smile.
"I'm not going anywhere, John." His heart leapt when she said his name.
"Besides, how can I leave when you still owe me coffee?" They stood there, simply smiling at each other, completely oblivious of the three figures watching the proceedings from a nearby window.

"Kiss her, you idiot," Red whispered. Liz playfully punched Jack in the arm, jockeying for a spot at the window. Jack moved over so Liz could step in front of him, and wrapped his arms around her, kissing the top of her head.
"He'll never do it, he's too shy," Liz said. She smiled at the sight of them outside, though, reminded of the days she and Jack were like that.
"She's right, HB. Kitty's gonna have to do it, or it'll never happen." Jack grinned over Liz's head.
"I am disappointed you two have such little faith in my boy Myers. Care to put your money where your mouth is?"
And thus the first office pool concerning Kitty and John was born.

Red still owes me for this, you know that?
