She was a tiny teenage whirlwind of blue silk and chiffon. Mulder had never seen anyone so excited for a dance.

“It’s not just a dance, it’s the prom!” Kitty told him as she checked herself in the mirror again. “Surely you had one when you were my age.”

Mulder laughed. “It was so long ago I can barely remember.” He watched as she put her earrings on, then struggled with the matching necklace. He stepped forward and took it from her, his large fingers fumbling with the tiny clasp.

He looked at their reflection in the mirror. She was a vision. He had more worry lines on his face than he would have liked.

“You’re going to be careful, right? I may not remember prom, but I remember what it’s like to be a teenage boy.”

Kitty scoffed. “Mulder! This isn’t my first date, you know.”
