phasing_catCharacters: Kitty Pryde-Myers (X-Men) and random BPRD gynecologist (Hellboy)

Setting: Bump In The Night!Verse

Kitty’s legs dangled off the end of the examination table as she waited for the doctor to come back with the test results. She pulled the paper gown tighter around herself and took a shaky breath. She’d been working on an assumption for weeks since she’d found out she was pregnant. Now was the moment of truth.
She looked anxiously at the door when it opened, worrying her bottom lip between her teeth. Being an agent was her life, she wasn’t sure how she was going to survive without working in the field every day. But she knew, more than she’d ever known anything, that she would sacrifice whatever she had to in order to keep her baby.
“Well, Doc?”
The woman coughed, and flipped through a few pages in Kitty’s file. “I’m sorry, Mrs. Myers. But we cannot be certain what effect phasing would have on your fetus. So until your child is born, I’m going to recommend you be taken off of field duty.”
Kitty nodded. It was what she had expected. “Do you think that phasing is what made it so difficult for me to get pregnant in the first place? Like, maybe I was phasing too much and it was making it impossible for the egg to implant?”
The doctor shrugged. “It is certainly possible. As far as I know, no one with your ability has ever been through this facility, nonetheless had a child. There’s simply no precedent for it that I can find, so there is no research to fall back on. You are a unique person, having a unique pregnancy, and I believe it is best we err on the side of caution, don’t you?”
Kitty nodded enthusiastically. “Definitely.”
"That means no phasing at all, not even partially. I know it seems like you should be able to phase just an arm or a leg if you need to, but I don't want to risk it. I do think you can phase others, however, if need be. But only if it's a life threatening emergency, understand?"
"Got it." Kitty paused for a moment, considering. “Is it too early to do genetic testing? To see if the baby’s inherited my mutation? You got all of the papers Dr. MacTaggert sent over about my genetic code, didn’t you?”
“Yes, I did, and I believe we should wait until after the child is born to do that kind of testing. Genetic mapping can require blood and tissue samples, something that might be too traumatic for an unborn child. Have you spoken to your husband about it, like I suggested?”
Kitty swallowed hard. “No, not yet. I haven’t even decided if I want to know for sure.”
“Of course. Just let me know what you two decide.” The doctor stood and shook Kitty’s hand. “I’ll see you back here in two weeks for your regular weigh in and ultrasound. ”
Kitty smiled. “Thank you.”
“Take your time getting dressed. Oh, I forgot to mention one more thing.” The doctor smiled widely. “You’re having a girl.”
