The house was silent, save for the light snoring of the woman she was watching, and the slow, even breathing of her husband lying next to her.  She took a step further into the room, closer to the sleeping couple.  They were blissfully unaware of her presence, as they had been for the past several days.

As they had celebrated Valentine’s Day, she’d watched.  Ash he’d given her a birthday present the day after, she’d watched.  As they’d laid in bed at night, him talking to the child growing inside his wife, she’d waited – and she’d yearned.  Her heart ached for the life she was watching.  It was a life and a happiness that used to be hers.

Now, in the dark and heavy hour just before dawn, she made her move.  She was tired of watching them smile and laugh.  Every kiss, every touch, she had observed had only solidified her resolve.  After listening to the tender lovemaking that had come after the birthday celebration, she’d known was she had to do.  They were living a life that had been taking from her.  She was going to take it back.

With a swift and fluid motion she approached Kitty’s side of the bed.  She was not afraid despite never having attempted what she was about to do before.  She wanted it with all her heart and soul.  And when it came down to it, soul was all she was.  If anyone had been watching what happened next, they would have seen Virginia’s ghost lie down on the bed, settling into and then disappearing into Kitty’s sleeping body.

No sound or movement betrayed the struggle that ensued inside that small body over the next few minutes.  Virginia immediately felt the tiny life inside the body, embracing it and wrapping it in all the love she had to give.  It was the reason she was doing this.

The alarm woke John at seven.  He blinked sleepily before reaching over to turn it off.  A glance at his wife showed that the alarm hadn’t disturbed her, as usual.  She was one of the few people he knew who could sleep through a freight train barreling through the house.  Considering the pregnancy and their late night the evening before, he decided to let her sleep in.

After showering and dressing in the second bathroom he returned to her side.

“Katie?  It’s time to get up.”

She didn’t move, not even a twitch.  He sat down on the bed and took her hand, idly noting how much warmer than normal it was.  He kissed the back of it, reaching down with his other hand to shake her shoulder gently.

“Sweetheart, you’re going to be late.”  He kissed her forehead, feeling slightly relieved when she stirred beneath him.

She groaned and breathed deeply.  She stretched one leg toward the foot of the bed, then the other, before stretching both arms over her head.  Finally she opened her eyes, her vision hazy at first.  He smiled down at her, not knowing that while he was looking at his wife, Virginia was looking back at him.

“How’re you feeling?” he asked.

A smile slowly spread across her face as she gazed back at him.  It was the sweet smile of success.

"Happy to be alive."
